I have about 70,000 tracks and only use discnumbers on multidisc CDs. I
used dbpa for ripping. For single discs, I always delete the discnumber
in dbpa info panel just before ripping (deleting in mp3tag works fine
too).

I've never had any issues with this approach.  I have however heard of
some odd issues from a few others when they had the disc number set for
single disc CDs.
