Besides the sillyness, I typically use Artistsort to reflect where I'd expect to find the artist in a record store rather than any special rule. My artist names are usually as we see them, but I'd expect to find people like Elton John under John, Elton, so I set the Artistsort accordingly. The gets dropped if the band uses it, but being that I'm in a place that is a bit ignorant of other language conventions, a bands like Los Lobos and Los Super 7 get filed under Los, despite the fact that it is no different than The in English. That's how it would be filed in a record store, so that's how I filed it. I suppose I could change given that I rarely use a record store anymore, but I've gotten used to it that way.
Album Artist (Albumartist, depending on how you set it), I usually set to be the same as Artistsort anyway. THis goes back to the days when software like Winamp didn't (and maybe still doesn't, I don't use it anymore) support artistsort. More recently AlbumArtist allows me to unify certain bands and artists so that all permuations of the Miles Davis Quintet, etc. file under Davis, Miles as an album artist. Although, if I had to do it over again, I'd probably do Miles Davis with an AlbumArtistSort. Compilations are similarly organized in that AlbumARtist will reflect where I might find the album, thus a Soundtrack is given Albumartist = Soundtrack, other compilations AA = VA Compilation, and tribute CD's are under something like AA = ARtist (Tribute)... for example Dylan, Bob (Tribute). Abumsort, I've never used, but I probably could to address items with "A..." or "The ". But, I am album artist oriented in listening habits and rarely browse for an album first. The one that does catch me up is The Joshua Tree.
