Great question!  We're making the move to RD over the weekend and have
thought about the same thing.  We are currently using Prophet but will go
LIVE with RD in the next couple of days.  I was able to share folders with
our production computer over our network (Windows) and then set up some
Dropboxes on the RD machine to drop weather, music, etc.  So far it has
worked good but I'm such a newbie.  I'm looking forward to the reply's from
others on this as we'd be interested in this approach as well.
