Here's what I would do.. It may be slightly different in your system as I am
still running suse 11.2 (evergreen) with RD 1.7.

1. Close Rivendell. Air audio from an alternate source.

2. If you want to remove jack altogether, go to yast/software management and
remove it from there. If you want it to not start at boot, go to yast/system
services (runlevel). In expert mode, make sure that all the runlevels are
unchecked for jack. It might be called qjackctl or jackd or something like
that.. You can also go to control center/startup applications and make sure
jack isn't listed or checked..

3. Run rdalsaconfig as root in terminal like this..

su root

it will ask you for your root password. Enter it. The prompt should change
color (usually red). Now type

rdalsaconfig

When rdalsaconfig comes up. Move your desired soundcard (maudio delta 44) to
the bottom box and close rdalsaconfig. Leave the terminal open.

4. Stop Rivendell daemons as root in terminal like this..

/etc/init.d/rivendell stop

5. Open RDAdmin. It will now look directly at ALSA for sound.

6. Go to Manage Hosts. Choose your host. Click on RDAirplay. Card 0 Port 0
is the main output of your selected soundcard (the soundcard you put in the
bottom box of rdalsaconfig). In your case, Card 0 Port 0 is outputs 1 and 2 on
your delta 44 card.

7. While still editing your host, click on RDLibrary. Card 0 Port 1 is the
second output of your selected soundcard (the soundcard you put in the bottom
box of rdalsaconfig). In your case, Card 0 Port 1 is outputs 3 and 4 on your
delta 44 card. With that being said, on the OUTPUT choose card 0 port 1. *Note
- The INPUT side should still say Card 0 Port 0. This is input 1 and 2 on the
delta 44.

8. Open RDAirplay and you should be good to go..

Now.. There is a common issue that shows up here.. By default, the second
output of the delta 44 is muted by ALSA. You need to change this by doing the
following..

As root in terminal, run alsamixer.
While in alsamixer, make sure that you are changing settings for the maudio
delta 44 card ALSA driver, not pulseaudio!
In alsamixer, DAC 0 and DAC 1 are outputs 1 and 2 on the delta 44. DAC 2 and
DAC 3 are ouputs 3 and 4 on the delta 44. Raise the levels to your liking and
viola! Your good to go!

Subject: Re: [RDD] Clarification on JACK, Pulse Audio, and ALSA

Thanks a bunch. Our system here is straight-up broadcasting so from the sounds
of it, stick with ALSA and ditch Jack? So the question I would have then is,
how do you get rid of Jack? And once JACK is gone, how does ALSA get priority?

  Hi Terry,

I see you're running with Ubuntu. Unless you have a specific need for
Pulseaudio (there's some app you're using on a
regular basis that needs to do audio through Pulse) then my suggestion is to
disable it. Unfortunately with Ubuntu
there's no way to easily remove Pulse (I've tried many times - it is possible
but not easy). But it can be fairly
easily turned off. Then you'll have straight ALSA, unless you use Jack - in
which case you'll have Jack talking to
  ALSA.

To turn Pulseaudio off, there are instructions in the Wiki at

http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Ubuntu_-_No_sound/sound_card_in_Rivendell_after_setup

See those instructions, they generally work fairly well.

As has been mentioned already on this list, if you're setting up a straight
broadcast machine that isn't doing anything
else, your best bet is straight ALSA, you'll get the least amount of latency
and fewer things to troubleshoot if
something doesn't work properly. On the other hand if you want to run other
audio applications then you'll likely need
  Jack.
