Ubuntu was a pain. Every six months they'd come out with a new version 
that would throw me a different curve ball. Finally I switched to Debian, 
which as a more conservative distribution tends just to work.

Straight ALSA is certainly the easiest to configure, but early on I ran 
into dropout problems and driver-dependent weirdnesses that went away when 
I switched to Audioscience sound cards and the asihpi driver. asihpi has 
been my preference for a while now. It's not the easiest to get working, 
though.

I've never tried Jack.
