Straight ALSA is certainly the easiest to configure, but early on I ran into dropout problems and driver-dependent weirdnesses that went away when I switched to Audioscience sound cards and the asihpi driver. asihpi has been my preference for a while now. It's not the easiest to get working, though. I've never tried Jack.
