Yes, I do agree that the way Ubuntu gets released and the changes that seem to 
get made to releases, keeping up with the
latest version can be a pain.

However for something like Rivendell you don't really want to or need to be 
updating the OS all the time.  As a result
I've learned to only use the LTS releases (8.04, 10.04) and ignore the rest.  
Even continuing to use them when they have
passed their official end of support date (hence the detective work that I've 
done getting Rivendell 2.1.1 to compile
and run on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.4 LTS.).  One of these days I might switch over to 
either Debian or CentOS, but I've also
found that switching from what is familiar to something less familiar - even 
within the Linux world - can
offer challenges that you never would have thought of.
