And I can confirm the IP address, but not the defacement, from two separate
machines in two separate buildings, both running FF8/Linux.

At this second, I see the site, up and undefaced.

I'm wondering if perhaps there are some bad transparent proxies inside some 
people's ISP...?

Fred: Note that hitting the IP address of the webserver, statistically, is
unlikely to actually tell you anything; unless that site is the default site
for that apache, it's not what you'll get back.

The result you posted is common for multi-site webservers, and is, indeed, 
what I get here when I hit the IP URL.
