Is it possibly due to the bit rate being variable instead of constant? I've
seen some not-great Win audio programs that would also throw up if they were
fed a VBR.

Audacity might just be resaving the file as a CBR MP3, which could be somewhat
more palatable to the system. Just a guess.

Strange... I also have problems with some mp3 files... even if I
installed mad/twolame/lame, and apparently they were encoded by lame
itself.
Here's what mediainfo says about:

Audio
Format : MPEG Audio
Format version : Version 1
Format profile : Layer 3
Mode : Joint stereo
Mode extension : MS Stereo
Duration : 3min 59s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 212 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 44,1 KHz
Stream size : 6,06 Mb (100%)
Writing library : LAME3.90.
Encoding settings : -m j -V 2 -q 2 -lowpass 19 --vbr-old

And here's one of those files

Thank you for helping
