And many of them will be for things that have little if any business 
running on a Rivendell box, such as OpenOffice or Firefox.

On some flavors of Linux -- not CentOS, apparently, or Debian 6.0 -- a 
kernel update will break the asi-hpi driver, which then has to be 
recompiled.

Even when my clients run Windows-based automation systems, I advise them 
not to take updates but to isolate their systems from potential threats 
instead. Few things are as frustrating as AudioVault in a bad mood.

A former client reported to me that some WideOrbit machines are sensitive 
to different versions of Java, and one of his stations got into trouble 
when someone responded to one of those annoying "A new version of Java is 
ready to be installed!" prompts.
