Are you using Debian? Since Squeeze (or at least one of the updates to 
it) its used insserv instead of update-rc.d for setting system services 
up.  Maybe its a conflict with that?

alsasound is the sound card foundation you basically have Card -> Kernel 
Drive -> ALSA (alsasound).

I suppose you could try starting alsa at a higher runlevel but my Linux 
skills aren't great so I'd have to revert to the Google method.
