You are correct: stock Rivendell's audio store supports either PCM16 or 'MP2' 
(properly known as 'MPEG Layer 2').  At no time was 'MP3' (properly 'MPEG Layer 
3') ever supported.

There were also a set of patches against v1.x floating about the community at 
one time that enabled OggVorbis support, but these never made it into the 
'official' sources, nor AFAICT were they ever ported to v2.x.  There is 
vestigial play-only support for such a setup in v2.x.
