I agree, thinking of that also but I thought I remembered seeing other
users talking about sound suddenly being messed up in this list so I
reported how to "solve" it anyway

I'd plug in an add-on video card, ANY video card,
disable internal video, and see.
If that works, hardware *is* failing. Replace the machine.
