This could also be an xrun problem, with the apps behaving badly because 
jackd(1) has kicked them off the graph.  Certain mobo-based video setups are 
known to be a source of kernel latency problems.  It’d probably be wise to 
replace the mobo-based video with a dedicated video card.

To troubleshoot it, start jackd(1) independently, before jamin or the Rivendell 
services, and monitor its output for xrun notifications.  Better yet, use a 
Jack management tool (such as QJackCtl), which will make monitoring for this 
sort of thing easy.
