As a newbie, I can only offer this:
It is my understanding that Rivendell uses only ONE standard file
format. When setting up the machine in RDAdmin you basically tell it
whether it will use raw audio (wav) or MPEG2, set the global bitrate, etc.
At that point, everything that is imported gets converted to that
standard format, no matter what the source audio is.
I haven't really paid attention to see if you can globally set "mono",
but in this day and age, hard drive storage space is cheap for audio
(try doing video, as in TV automation!).
Anyway, the way Rivendell does it I am sure has advantages and
disadvantages, but it does make for a nice neat tidy audio library.

I have someone producing a newscast in mono and feeding it to
rdimport. The file is mono, 16-bit linear .wav. It's 7 megabytes.
However, when the imported file is placed in /var/snd. it's 21
megabytes and appears to be stereo. Can rdimport be doing that? If so,
is there a way to stop it?
