Cannot agree more.
In an 'ideal' situation there are two programme source systems. One 'live' and one back-up'. The silliest things can cause a lock up, and cutting to the alternate system should not also compromise the rest of the programme chain.

At the same time we have a constant battle with A to D and D to A interfaces that degrade the signal at every cascade.

I am all for a direct digital [44.1 or 48] to mpx encoding system, and they exist, just not so sure how a x4 upsampling is going to sound..
