hi,

the ACPI can be turned off in the boot process by hitting <e> at the 
grub boot screen, then down arrow, then <e> again, then changing 
acpi=no-idle to acpi=off.  hit ENTER then <b> to boot.

to make it permanent, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and make the same acpi 
change.

what happens when you try to log in as a normal user?

to remove grub from the MBR, you can sys c: from a dos floppy.  this 
will replace it with the dos bootloader.
