The main problem with that is that the local ISP still needs to buy the
loop from SBC. I had a similar situation with a client in Palo Alto, who
had a DSL line. Every time there was a problem, the ISP would blame the
telco, and the telco would blame the ISP, and neither one would do
anything about it.
The phone company *is* clueless, but at least it's their line, so they
*can* do something about it if you can convince them it's their fault.
That usually takes a lot of shouting, but it can be done.
