Some bloatware is just going to be slow (e.g. Mozilla and OpenOffice). 
Also, KDE and (to a lesser extent) GNOME are relatively slow, too. Replace 
'em all.

Use AbiWord for fast word processing whenever possible; it's less 
featureful, but definitely more nimble. Use Galeon instead of Mozilla; 
it's the same rendering engine, but faster. Use a window manager instead 
of a desktop environment; good choices are WindowMaker and Xfce. Heck, 
with proper tweaking, TWM is an absolute speed demon.

Also, the default Red Hat 9 uses GNOME with Metacity. Metacity doesn't let 
you turn off animations and such; if nothing else, replace it with SawFish 
so that you can turn animations off. That might help a bit, too.
