Totally download Knoppix, it is worth the long download. Pop the disk in and it should see all your ext2 partitions and mount them for you. From there, you can set up your Internet connection with your SBC service and you'll be able to move your important files else ware. As far as back up, if you have important stuff, you might want to rig a cron job to rsync them somewhere else every few days.
