I'm not sure about verizon. I have experienced bad things with the ATT Wireless / Cingular merger and switched to T-Mobile.
I recently got a T-Mobile Sidekick II, aka Danger Hiptop for free at the t-mobile store, well i had to float $100 but I get it back in service credits and rebates. This phone is sooo worth it. $20/mo for the data and then your voice minute plans. I only had to sign a year contract as well.
If you do get one, get on the developer plan, as it comes with a free ssh, and you can load a variety of applications on the phone that t-mobile doesnt sell, you can download the sdk, and an emulator. The entire phone is java based.

I totaly reccomend this phone and the service with T-Mobile is better than Cingular/ATT's....
