Apparently Sprint Vision enables you to use any "PCS Vision" phone as a 100-200kbps dialup modem. Sprint does not approve of this use on unlimited Vision plans, but the consensus on the net seems to be that you have to be pretty outrageous to get dinged for it. Radio Shack sells a $30 USB connection kit that contains the cable you need. See http://www.natecarlson.com/linux/sanyo-4900.php or do a google search for
sprint+vision+modem.

Verizon seems to have a decent deal on the Motorola V265, and I can get a discount through work with ATT wireless, and an equivalent phone is the Motorola V505. I'd like to get a phone that supports an ssh client.

I switched to Sprint from Verizon for no real reason other than I wanted
the rebate on a Treo 600. I installed the open source ssh program "pssh"
and I can connect to my Linux machines without problems from the phone.
I do have some complaints, such as pssh doesn't support ssh keys, my
screen is only 160x160 (the Treo 650 came out right after I bought the
600, 320x320 screen, doh!), and the keystrokes can get a big laggy, but
it is better than nothing. I've used the Treo as my main "computer" for
a while when on the road without a laptop. Painful, but like I said,
better than nothing.
SprintPCS is $15/mo for unlimited data (no voice).
