I have set up a dual boot several times, no 3rd party software needed. If you'd like, I can join you while setting this up, just send me an e-mail and i'll give you my number, and set up a time to do this. Other than that, I have a few suggestions:
For Linux and Windows on separate hard drives
1) Install Windows FIRST
2) Install Linux, and its boot loader to the first sector of the Linux hard drive
3) In the BIOS, set the Linux drive to be the one to boot from, not Windows.

For Linux and Windows on the Same hard drive:
1) Install Windows FIRST
2) Make a small partition, just for booting Linux (i forget how big, but it'll let you know). Also, format this small boot partition as a FAT32.
3) After you've installed windows, then Linux, and have installed the boot loader to that small boot partition, you'll need a windows 9x boot disk to set that boot loader partition to the active partition.

NO, step 2 & 3 aren't needed to get this to work, but if something were to happen to your Linux partition, it won't keep you from booting into windows, and vice versa. I'm not sure, but with this set-up you might even be able to re-install windows without this affecting your boot loader.

As you install Linux, Linux will see that you have windows, and Linux will set up the boot loader with options to boot into Linux or windows. I'm sure you could install Linux first, then windows, but then there would be more configuring you'll have to do to the boot loader.

I couldn't agree with Mark more though. I personally have gone to using 2 PCs (one windows, one Linux) with a KVM switch, which allows you to use 1 Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor for both computers.

I also have installed <a href="http://www.realvnc.com/";>RealVNC</a> on both machines and it works wonderfully, using windows as the server. The free version works well enough for me, although "Desktop Scaling" in the pay version would probably come in handy. To prevent having to scroll using windows, I just set windows to a lower resolution.
