What chipset are you talking about? With most implementations, I'm being simple and saying "it doesn't work". Most "RAID" implementations are actually software raid with a few hardware speedups (IE, most of the work is still being done by the drivers). But with a 3ware controller (and probably a couple others, but since 3ware has worked so well for us, I haven't really researched the alternatives), it's all hardware. Under linux, the array looks like a regular SCSI drive. The firmware on the array controller takes care of all the details relating to hotplug.
