The controller is a promise chipset and we're not using the "hardware
raid". It's all Linux software.

What chipset are you talking about?  With most implementations, I'm
being simple and saying "it doesn't work".  Most "RAID" implementations
are actually software raid with a few hardware speedups (IE, most of the
work is still being done by the drivers).  But with a 3ware controller
(and probably a couple others, but since 3ware has worked so well for
us, I haven't really researched the alternatives), it's all hardware.
Under linux, the array looks like a regular SCSI drive.  The firmware on
the array controller takes care of all the details relating to hotplug.
