try them all for yourself and see.

Course, the free-ness of these is depandant on your specific application of
the operating system.

Try the major 4 freebies: *BSD, Linux.
Pick the one you like best. As far as Linux goes, you'll probably want to
try several of the distributions, because they are all a bit different.
