Well, I personally never really worry about how the community will react to 
my ideas.  Very few players are conscious of the struggle between different 
genres of the text-based game, or at most they have a personal preference.  
If the game is good, it will get players regardless of what base it uses.
Or at least, I'd like to think so.

I seriously doubt it, so long as you don't actually use ROM code.  If you 
look around, the ROM/Diku/Merc combat system is fairly derivative of other 
RPGs also.  It's not really that complicated, and much of it is common to all 
round-based combat systems.

We'll call it a shortcut :)  If done well, it should let you script most of 
what happens in the game.  If done poorly, it should at least give you some 
really cool mobprogs.
