I would recommend Ammaross's bitvectoring system (which uses int's). Not sure of the link, but I'm sure Ammaross could give it to you. It's what I converted to (and successfully was able to test out by creating 30,000 generic affects, putting them all on a mob, saving, loading, poking at him, killing him, randomly setting and unsetting, etc all without any problems or bugs).
