One word. SASL.

Given today's network infrastructure, the worries of someone (who really
gives a damn) sniffing your mud traffic, is miniscule. The cost-to-gain
ratio for something like this, is on the order of "not worth the effort."
(All cost (read: work, etc), and very little gain.)
