Gold Corporation, the company that plans to invest in the controversial Rosia Montana gold mining project, admitted it supports the mobile phone bill of the local mayor. According to a release from the company, the reason is that it is necessary to keep the phone running is so the mayor can be contacted at any time about possible problems in the community.

Furthermore, the paying of the mobile phone bill for the mayor is part of a wider program designed to spread into the entire community and help residents of the area have a better communication with the mayor, the school and the hospital. The company also plans to open an Internet center in the village.

The plans are based on the fact that residents can "hardly afford access to communication means" due to the unemployment rate and the low budgets currently at the disposal of local authorities, the release states.

On Friday, the president of the Romanian-Canadian company, Alan Hill denied reports that his firm is paying Rosia Montana mayor's phone bill.

"As far as I know, we are not paying for that gentleman's phone. We do not pay anything for any politician," he said.

The Rosia Montana mining project has been widely criticized by environmentalists, several politicians and parts of the media, which alleged that some of the local authorities' relatives work for the company or have business with it.
