Hello Arne, hello Peter,
this is my comment to your discussion:
I am looking at CASE tools for several months and some of them use a database. E.g.
the Oracle Designer uses (what else?) the Oracle DB for storing data. The thing I
cannot find with the Designer is
that there is no configuration management possible (or not with low effort and
resources, or I simply don't know it). Others use text files (I think PowerDesigner is
one of them) and these are really
large files to store.
There are some things more to have a look at:
- It is very good to make a reusage of a DB for storing data. But config management
should be considered too, especially the defined CM tool should be used for UML tools,
too. E.g.: I want to see
version X of the UML model. How much time does it take to have a look at it?
- Portability: If you don't use a standardized interface (e.g. SQL) you are dependent
on the portability of the DB (or on the portability to other DBs of your DB interface).
- Fault tolerance: this has been said before.
- Cost efficiency: Do I have to buy a DB along with my CASE tool?
So what is needed?
I don't think a simple SQL DB is enough.
I don't think that the text file used by Rose is the one and only one solution to the
problem (one thing I am really angry about is the loading and saving time of really
big models even if they are
structured with controlled units, see also the parallel discussion on safety of
controlled units).
I think the one who constructs a CM integratable storage solution of UML models
including branching and visual merging will earn a lot of money. [Oh I have some ideas
to implement this. Perhaps I
should set up a company and start development ;-)]
Regards
Thomas
