Oliver,
the logical database model is a model of the database design without any
considerations of the physical implementation. This means the logical model
must NOT be denormalized because of performance or any other implementation
issue.
The logical model (object model) is not just another view to the database -
as many of other tools try to describe it because of the lack of tool
capabilities - it is an independent view, which has to develop into the
physical model - and manage the traceability to it and vice versa.
The object model itself is because of the nature of objects normalized.
Actually - to be absolutely clear - the object model must not be the model
the application developer uses for the application design. It is a logical
model of persistent objects, which have to be used by the application. It
describes the access from the application and the expected behavior of
persistent structures. There will be another object model (class model)
which is used by the application developer, which will defer from the
persistent object model, and use more precise application based information
(for example Java or C++ methods, attributes, etc.).

Subject: Re: (ROSE) Data modeler & Oracle 8
Hi John,
as far as i've now read other messages to this thread, i would like to
underline your words. From my point of view (a database designer's view)
there
is a missing layer betwenn the object model and the schema. Whenever i do
normalization works or (more worse) denormalization works, i have (a) to
handle
hundreds of "columns" within the schema or (b) to modify the object
model what
is not amusing for the rest of the crew.
I think that designing enterprise size databases does not mean supporting
enterprise size dbms. It means supporting the requirements of database
design
in an environment with purely relational and very big databases, which can
not
be generated directly from out the object model.
