The major resource you need is a process describing a pragmatic approach to
use UML.
I suggest to take a look at http://www.hoora.org describing such a pragmatic
approach. All the info on the website can also be downloaded in a document
form (more than 100 pages).
An example mini-project to understand the process by looking at an example,
can be started at http://www.hoora.org/hoora_example.htm.
