Hi Reaney,

A Brief History Of Software Reuse:
1960s - subroutines, 1970s modules, 1980s objects, 1990s components,
millennium product lines.

You need to move your development organization away from the mentality of
developing applications one-at-a-time. Everyone needs to be thinking in
terms of developing a product line (a set of products that together address
a particular market segment or fulfill a particular mission). Look for
commonalities and variabilities between products in the product line. The
payoff point should occur after the second or third product. After that you
are developing new products from core (common) assets. This will give your
organization a great advantage over the competition.

Each product in the product line shares core assets (this is not just
sharing code). One core asset is the Business Plan. You need this in order
to sell the idea, and to evaluate the success of your product line. You will
also need a marketing plan to know what features your product line will
support. Use cases will help you define these features.

The short version of this is that a governance model for component reuse
needs to be in place before the promise of reuse can be realized. You are in
luck, since the SEI has done tremendous work for you in this area.

This will get you started:

and you really should read this book:

Subject: (ROSE) exchanging element of one model with another

Hi,

We are in the process of setting off on a number of projects that will all
be "interrelated" at the component level build a round a common physical
architecture current legacy silo systems. The premise to develop a logical
common data structure for all information with company

A project will call on two major set of resources; a corporate set of
components; and a COTS set of components resulting in a third set of product
to be built. Now, to ensure that opportunities for ensuring that all
projects are singing of the same set of components models they need to
understand and contain corporate components as an example but they must be
copied (shared) and not rewritten (danger of error) into the project
specific models. The best would be that change within the corporate model is
reflected out into all models that utilise corporate components.

At the end of a project the developed components as returned to the
corporate model for future utilisation.

Has anyone a notion as to a solution to this?

This might be aiming for nirvana but project exist within projects and
models need to be kept to a manageable size.

Looking forward to responses

Kind regards
Ramsay
