COCOMO (COnstructive COst MOdel)  is indeed a methodology and a tool for estimating project budget and time. It was first first published by Boehm in his 1981 book Software Engineering Economics.  Since then there have been revisions of the model, with the latest being in 1998, I think. This is the Cocomo II model.  The revisions expanded on the assumptions of the original model, which was strictly waterfall, and added estimations for language, platform, granularity of input data, etc.  The tool is available from http://sunset.usc.edu/research/cocomosuite/index.html

Enjoy, but don't forget - it's a tool which is only as good as the assumptions that it's based upon.

Cheers

But as I understand that COCOMO is a methodology and not a tool.
COCOMO as a methodology is fine but when it come to communicating your estimations to others in terms of reports or charts or figures a tool will be really handy.

Rational doesn't have an estimation tool, I would look at Cocomo.  McGraw-Hill  has a book by T. Casper Jones Estimating Software Cost that I use as a reference.

Subject: (RUP) Estimation

Hi All,

Does Rational provide for any estimation tools/ methods? I face this question everytime I talk or hear of requisite Pro/Rose.
If not are there any tools in the market which are good enough and how many of them can be linked with rational tools.?

thanks in advance
