Well, I did that.  It was surprisingly complicated, though.  I mean, 
the code isn't particularly complicated now, but I had to go through 
quite a number of different variations before working out how not to 
get the selection blitzed by the next refresh or get selected for the 
purposes of the segment parameter box but not visibly selected or 
whatever.

It's this old chestnut again: why is the selection on the segment 
canvas stored as a set of SegmentItems in the selector tool, instead 
of as a set of Segments in (say) the RGView?  Should I take this 
opportunity to go ahead and fix that?  I'm not keen to as I know it'd 
be fiddly to do and guaranteed to break something, but the current 
situation does cause us terrible flatulence and discomfort every time 
we try to do anything like this.
