My SC-8820 manual doesn't mention such a controller. I _guess_ the
first Roland devices used #0 as "variation controller" because they
didn't have banks, only variations, and it later was renamed to "bank
select" when General MIDI came out.

No. I think Edirol might send you a .pdf if you asked, by they won't
have manuals of older devices.

I can send you the 8820's manual if you want. (Pick any of German/
French/Italian/Spanish; English wasn't on the CD because it already
came in the dead-tree version.)
