OK, I haven't really seen how selections are actually implemented interface hook-up wise, but I'm thinking something as simple as a toggle. If you attempt to select a segment twice, it gets removed from the selection the second time. I'm surprised that isn't the case already, but it sure isn't. Seems pretty easy on the surface, but it might be uglier than I think.
