The sequencer knows when it's recording or when it's playing - check the transport
status.   The record/play metronome distinction is purely a gui notion - there is
only the need to map _a_ metronome at the sequencer and the gui can control
in what situations it appears.  From a user point of view the metronome has to
be consistent i.e. if you have the metronome on when recording then the next time
you record it's also on, if you have the metronome off during playback then again
the traversal from recording to playback should ensure that state matches.
