I think the core developers pretty much agree that this behaviour should change. It's just that (a) it would be fiddly to do and (b) changes to the behaviour of the segment canvas have a way of causing obscure bugs. Hence, we aren't doing it for 1.0, and while we'd love to see a patch for it, we probably wouldn't apply that before 1.0 either (just as you say).
