That makes it quite unusual -- most distros I know (Debian, SuSE,
PlanetCCRMA etc) have the 4 as part of the package name and not part of
the version number.

It doesn't matter too much to us what different distributions do, so
long as it's possible for them to do _something_, but the fact that
distributions _do_ differ means that we can't assume we'll always do it
one way just because a certain distro does.

If the main reason for your concern was because of the use of the name
1.0rc1, then please be reassured we won't ever expect (or want) distros
to package anything that's named as a release candidate and hasn't been
uploaded to SourceForge. The aim is to minimise the lifetime of these
release candidates, not extend it.

The previous release was a confusing one, though -- it was called
1.0pre1 to us, with the intention to signal that it was strictly the
same as 1.0 in feature set etc., but the tarball was called 0.9.91
presumably on the grounds that it was simpler to slot into a
distribution's ordered numbering scheme. Which is an OK principle with
me, although I couldn't understand what made 0.9.91 better than 0.9.9.5
or something.
