OK, I've daringly committed exactly that. Please test. I'll happily back it out if someone suggests a better way of avoiding this kind of problem -- and although I'd still very much like to know what actually caused it in this instance, I'm not convinced that dealing with that particular cause would be enough, I'd still fear the same thing happening again for some other reason.
