Glad to find a possible user of kmetronome here ;-) That program and Rosegarden are both KDE applications, while qjackctl isn't: it uses just Qt libs. This sounds like a problem with KDE libraries or with KDE settings. Can you start and use the KDE desktop? Can you use other KDE applications? KDE Control Center (kcontrol)?
