I think Rosegarden's official policy is that we should support Linux kernel
0.0.1 and KDE 0.0.1 if we can possibly do so, because somebody, somewhere
might still be using it. We are very loathe to break support for anything,
no matter how incredibly ancient it is, when breaking support can be avoided.
We probably feel this way because as soon as we code for some new feature in
QT x+1, we get some whiner running Red Hat 0.0.1 who reads us the riot act
for breaking everything unnecessarily.

Having said that, I think Lilypond's official policy is that you should be
prepared to see everything in the world turned completely upside down, and
should expect to have to re-code everything along the way to keep up with
whimsical new changes that render all of your old files useless until you
update them (hopefully with the auto-updater, if you're lucky.) Lilypond
culture seems to be one where nothing is sacred, everything is subject to
change, and users are expected to do whatever necessary to keep up with the
very latest version.

As such, I think it's probably a waste of effort on Rosegarden's part to
bother supporting anything older than the current stable version, and perhaps
one old version back. I'm not sure if Chris would agree, though, and you
should listen to him if he doesn't.

As far as structure, we care about results. If you need to toss the thing on
its head and rewrite it from the ground up, so be it. While you're at it,
you might try to sort out the accidental problem which is documented in the
code. The exporter is supposed to be using the new Pitch class, but the
Pitch class returrns bad values in certain cases, sso we hhave the whole
thingg computing evverytthing twice. (Sorry about the doubled letters..
