OK -- as far as I can be bothered with at the moment, you and Guillaume 
count as a majority.  I'll improve or revert it.  Sooner or later.

Annoyingly, I don't see any easy way to find out whether a cache is 
valid or not without doing all the same work anyway.

I've looked more closely and I think this _can_ be threaded, although 
it's surely overkill.  I'll see if I can think of anything simpler.
