OK, this evening and bits of tomorrow might work. I've given it a quick go, and it certainly seems to fix the problem of dodgy selection rectangle trails. I can't sensibly comment on other likely problems such as heavier CPU usage while scrolling on machines with slower video cards, though I'm guessing that the situation probably isn't going to be too bad. btw, we're still missing a trick with audio segment previews -- if you drag a selection and scroll with the newly selected audio segments visible, scrolling is terribly slow. I don't think that's related to your latest change. I think it's just that it notices "something" has changed and regenerates the audio preview -- even though the "something" that has changed (i.e. the colour scheme for the segment) could be accommodated by simply changing the colourmap for the existing preview image.
