First thing is MTC_DEBUG in sound/AlsaDriver.cpp. If that is enabled and MTC slave mode is on, you should see a constant stream of messages during playback if you just start the transport from RG, reporting the arrival or non-arrival of MTC quarter-frame and full- frame events. I think. Note that (a) I'm pretty sure you do have to switch JACK sync off, and (b) the MTC-generating device I think has to be connected to RG's record input (not controller input - or to both).
