I think there must be something about 1.3 that I don't like (well,
everyone knows it's an unlucky number!) -- so I would probably be happy
to jump straight to 1.4 and let logic go hang, except that it's a bit
too similar visually to our most recent release 1.2.4.
Maybe to add the last digit: 1.3.0? Then the next bugfix release (if there will be any)
of the 1.3 series would be 1.3.1. Next feature release would be 1.4.0 etc.
You're right in the sence that odd numbers are sometimes reserved for the development
series. LilyPond uses 2.odd.incremental (currently 2.9.17) for the development series and
2.even.incremental (currently 2.8.6) for the stable series. Each incremental development
release marks for a new feature or an important bugfix. Each incremental stable release
marks for a bunch of bugfixes.
There is no magic with the numbers. Ubuntu uses simply YEAR.MONTH (6.06), which
emphasizes the frequent nature of the scheduled releasing.
Best wishes,
Heikki
