Yes. I'm doing something like this at the track level. I have a member called 
m_staffType. (It's not in the svn code yet.) I keep flip-flopping on whether 
to put it in Track or Segment.

If they're in the same view, it won't work for the same reason an editable 
segment won't work. If they're in different views, no ghosts needed. :) The 
new tablature_patch svn handles edits made in other views. (Editing in 
TablatureView is still broken, but because I haven't gotten there yet, not 
because there's any difficulty in doing it.)

Non-editable ghost segments are a good idea though. It's nice to know someone 
else is thinking along these lines. I've been thinking about for a while, 
just in a little different context. In a highly imitative piece (like a 
fugue), ghost segments could be great. They could have a transposition 
property, but the individual events would be read-only.
