There seems to be consensus that
  'track' is 'a set of ALL events that play to the same channel'
and
  'segment' is 'a subset of a track'.

What we need is 'a group of events' which are not bound to a single
track. Such an 'event group' would allow all combinations of events,
no matter in which channels they end up.

Then
(i) 'event' is 'any event, no matter whether it ends up in midi or not'
(ii) 'event group' is 'an arbitrary group of events'
(iii) 'track' is 'an event group containing all events in a single channel'
(iv) 'composition' is 'an event group containing all events'
(v) 'segment' is 'an event group in which events are in a single channel'

Because the definition of event group is so wide, segments would be
come unnecessary.
