Looks like it may be a little while before we're done with 1.7.0.
Should we make a 1.6.2 in the meantime?

I've updated the stable_1_6 branch with everything from trunk that
looked like a bug fix and that didn't introduce or depend on any new
features.  Apart from that I've also committed one new feature -- the
check for a newer available version.

There are probably enough fixes here to justify another point release,
so long as the update didn't also break anything...

If we were going to do this, I'd also want to give the startup warning
dialogs a bit of an overhaul first, as they're so clumsy at the
moment.
